Vila Nova De Gaia

In the District of Porto, Portugal, there is a famous hill by the name of Mira Douro da Serra do Pilar.  There are two major hills in Vila Nova De Gaia, Mira Douro da Serra do Pilar and Jardim do Morro which is located right across the river.

The history of the hill dates back to the building of the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar in 1538 by the Order of Saint Augustine. The circular architectural design of the building and the elevated placement made the building a rare and strategic piece of architecture.

The history

During the Siege of Porto in 1832, the monastery became a military stronghold, and its high position on the hill made it a great military base. The height of the montesary made it a natural defence point. Today, the site remains a symbol of Porto’s resilience and cultural identity.

For travellers, the hill provides beautiful views of the water and town below. Hundreds of people gather on the hill to watch the sunset and see the glow of orange and pink before the sun sets.

A visit to Porto would not be complete without exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site. To learn more about the background of the monastery and its importance, visit the UNESCO website.
