Bragg Creek Ladies Auxiliary – Where The Kitchen Means Family

The Bragg Creek Ladies Auxiliary cook book was created by the organization as a fundraiser. (Josh Bruha, CMRU.ca)

The Bragg Creek Ladies Auxiliary invited me to attend a meeting in the heart of Bragg Creek Alberta on a brisk autumn evening. Surrounded by evergreens and foothills, not sure if I was in the right place, I stood outside a gate looking in on a property not unlike the rest of Bragg Creek and its community, historic and full of character.

 The Ladies Fundraise

Inside I met with the group who have been a part of Bragg Creek for 63 years hosting charitable events and raising money for the community. Nursing a glass of fermented grape juice offered by the ladies I learned the group began as a response to the needs of the community, and how its history has made it a staple of that very community. For example a Covid-19 community relief fund was formed by the group that has allowed them to support “children, families, and seniors in need and support for social, health, and educational programs that strengthen our community.”

Evolution and Rebranding

And now, the society is evolving, officially becoming The Bragg Creek Community Foundation. Although it is no doubt the community will continue to remember the organization as “the ladies” this welcomed change will bring the organization into its next phase of its evolution. This is the first and only time making a change like this for the organization and I could tell it was bitter sweet. In my meeting with the executives it was amazing to see how they reminisced about the history of the group and it was clear just how proud they are of that history.

You can find out more about the organizations future and history from the groups own Julie Handrahan in this interview.

The Cook Book Fundraiser

As part of the groups fundraising effort they have created a cook book. Bringing together favourite recipes from its members. The book, sold around the community has recipes like Toblerone Shortbread and Crab Cakes to help raise funds for the community. I got the pleasure to make a recipe by Jana Hart and produced a vlog about my experience.

Below is that video on how to cook her famous Baked Salmon With Dressing.
