Looking out for Calgary cats for more than 20 Years

By Mae Edillon Dec 7, 2023 | 12:20 PM

"The central hub" of the MEOW Foundation is the Adoption Centre in northeast Calgary (Mae Edillon, CMRU.ca)

The MEOW Foundation is one of Calgary’s many animal rescue societies and charities across the city. Their main focus? Cats, of course!

About MEOW

MEOW aims to provide care and the needs for cats as well as for the cat owners within the community. All the staff and volunteers are dedicated and caring for the cats that are in need. Members of the community and cat lovers alike can collaborate with MEOW to get the support they need to care for cats without much of a burden.

Jenna McFarland is the Director of Programs at MEOW for over two years and she shares her side of the story of the charity’s lasting impact and her feelings on her contributions to the community at large.

There are a number of different services and programs offered to Calgarians and especially those who are in need, financially or otherwise, to help them with their own cats and for strays.

Some of the services offered at MEOW include…

  • Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Trap Neuter Return (TNR)
  • Rescue and Adoption
  • Cat Food Assistance

Within its twenty-four years of history, the MEOW Foundation has grown from a small home in the northwest, to have many programs and outreach. For over a year now, MEOW became the owner of the Regal Cat Cafe in the Kensington area and has their very own thrift shop in the northeast. Not to mention the many clinics and veterinary centers that help cover more ground to help cats all throughout Calgary and the surrounding area.

The foundation helps to feed, support, house, and find families for around a thousand cats a year and help countless people who share their deep love and passion for the furry felines.

Reflection

I believe that Jenna McFarland and the people at the MEOW Foundation are making a difference in the community in all their endeavors, even if not every Calgarian is impacted by them directly. Their efforts to help the cat population and, by extension, the lives of ordinary people make an impact through their work as volunteers, veterinarians, and lovers of cats. Prior to working on them for this collaboration, I was unintentionally already engaged with their work as a customer at the Regal Cat Cafe in the Kensington area.

Throughout this experience, I could see the real passion and care that this foundation has for animals, specifically cats in need as well as the people who love them. The genuine love and dedication to saving cats and protecting them from threats of overpopulation and the dangers that arise from them not having the right support in place or their basic needs. They emphasize community involvement and collaboration from their partners and themselves with the many programs they provide for cats and those who want to help out. Their efforts at MEOW help to tackle one of many issues that most Calgarians are not immediately aware of, and it is approached with principles of respect and utmost care.
