Who’s using winter tires?

Winter tires provide many benefits to safely driving in slippery conditions. Winter tires are becoming used more by younger drivers (Ryan Mouck CMRU.CA)

There was a snow scare just over a month ago, before Halloween when the streets were covered with snow. Since then it has all but melted however, it will certainly be back and to stay. At may be easy to ignore winter but it is inevitable. In this brief relief, drivers may want to consider preparing their vehicles for the winter to come. 

 

How many people use winter tires? 

A recent survey by the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada found that Canadian drivers are becoming more reliant on winter tires. Aside from Quebec, where winter tires are mandated by law for all drivers. Only 71 per cent of Canadians now use winter tires in 2023. However, Alberta comes slightly higher than the average at 73 per cent of drivers. Overall, the majority of all Canadians choose to drive with winter tires through the poor conditions of Canadian winters. 

 

Young drivers usage

Younger drivers also were found to have a higher belief in the affectability of winter tires. Eighty-eight per cent of Young drivers aged 18-34 believe that the use of winter tires has protected them from loss of control or an accident in the past. Compared to 81 per cent of all Canadians. MRU must be full of winter tires!

Safety is key

Winter tires are the safest option for drivers in the winter as road conditions worsen. They have been proven to significantly shorten stopping distance in poor conditions. Of those that use winter tires, 83 per cent say that they do so to protect their family and to choose the safest option possible. Whether or not drivers choose to use winter tires; they must certainly choose to be safe and careful on Canada’s hazardous winter roads.
