Diabetes Canada has bins for people to donate items such as clothes, shoes, or bags for those in need. These bins are located in front of the Superstore in Airdrie, AB. (Yasmin Lee, CMRU.ca)

Around this time, the spirit of the holidays sparks action towards providing care and support to our communities. Giving to various charities or organisations can be done through donations or volunteer time.

Different ways to give

There are many organised ways to give back to your community and people in need. Here are some specific examples of places to donate to around the Calgary area.

  • The Calgary Food Bank is always a place to donate to and you can find a holiday wish list of most needed items for this time of year.
  • The Mustard Seed has various ways to help, check out their Gifts of Hope Catalogue to give a gift with purpose.
  • London Drugs holds a Christmas campaign called Stocking Stuffers for Seniors throughout western Canada.
  • The Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation has many different outlets to give, one stream of giving is called Gifts in Kind.
  • Adopt a family this holiday season through CP Kids & Families.

MRU Giving Day 2023

On Tuesday, November 28th Mount Royal University is hosting Giving Day. This year will be the third annual 24-hour campaign that celebrates philanthropy on campus and highlights the impacts of donors. Ways to give to the MRU community are presented through different challenges, a 50/50 cash raffle, and giving projects. To celebrate, students can get involved in activities throughout the day including puppy yoga and free coffee Tuesdays. MRU Giving Day directly supports students through scholarships, bursaries, mental and physical support, and athletic team support.

Giving season is for everyone

Anyone can find simple ways to make an impact, even a smile can brighten someone’s day. Simple acts of kindness can go a long way, like helping someone bring their groceries to their car or holding a door open for the person behind you. Another easy way to help others is to be a snow angel which is when you lend a hand by shovelling your neighbours sidewalk.

The season of giving is really about spreading kindness and sharing it with others in your community. Giving takes on many shapes and sizes so anyone can find a way to spread some cheer.
