Volt Hockey is an alternative way for children with special needs to play hockey. Volt Hockey  through Variety Alberta created a new adaptive way to play hockey.

Volt Hockey has programs in Calgary, Edmonton and recently Fort McMurray. Each session consists of six-week, one-hour sessions where the participants can focus on skill building, fun games, and player development. Participants are able to compete in 3v3 and 4v4 game of Volt. Participants use chairs that are used are battery operated and are controlled with a joystick.

Sessions are divided into one-hour sessions over six weeks. There are three groups for each session

  • Group 1
    • 6 to 8 years old
  • Group 2
    • 9 to 12 years old
  • Group 3
    • 18 years and older

The cost is $150 per session and funding from Kidsport Calgary and Kidsport Edmonton is available.

Jacey Gamroth is the Volt Coordinator for Variety Alberta and Jordyn Denny is the coach alongside the other volunteers. Jacey and Jordyn have been with Volt for many years and continue to work with the children while creating a healthy environment. The goal of Volt is to make sure everyone is welcome and to share the sport with those children who have special needs. Additionally, they help these kids feel included and in an environment where they are always smiling while having fun with their friends.

The most important and greatest thing about hockey that it is a sport for everyone. Volt Hockey is an important organization as it helps to create a safe environment for children and adults who have special needs. Personally, special needs awareness is a topic that is new to society and there is still room to grow. When talking to the parents and participants, the common thought was that Volt Hockey has created a safe space where the kids are able to have fun and make friends without being judged for having special needs.
