The MRU Cubs dance team during rehearsal for their upcoming gameday (Dillon Neufeld CMRU.ca)
The MRU Cubs are the dance team here at Mount Royal University. If you have ever been to the men and women’s basketball/volleyball games, odds are you would have seen this energetic group of hard working ladies in between games. The team meets three to five times a week to prepare for their game days and other events.
Cubs Teams
The cubs are split into two teams, the performance team and the competitive team. The performance team does all the gameday dances and everything on campus for the varsity sports teams. The competitive dance team has competitions all throughout the month of March. As well the cubs offer drop-in sessions where anyone of any skill can come in and take combo classes, instructed by members of the competitive and performance team
The Cubs have quickly become much more notable around campus. The team has been around since 2014 and has slowly grown in popularity. Cubs team captain Bree Laperriere is in her fourth year of dancing with the team and is beginning to notice a shift in recognition. Laperriere stated “Cougars Rec decided that they were going to take us on with rugby and fast ball, and so it kind of started this like subcategory of varsity clubs where we all hang out under. And ever since that started up, it’s felt like immediately being a part of that already felt like it was like a next step.”
Cubs x Cowboys Nights
In November the cubs will be performing at cowboys dance hall on the 13th, 20th, and 27th. The performances are to fundraise for the program’s cost which includes studio fees, costumes, etc. All proceeds go towards the cubs dance program. If you want to go see the cubs perform live, visit @mrucubsdanceteam on instagram for the QR code to get tickets into cowboys. You can also see them at all MRU basketball and volleyball game days at Kenyon Court. For more information on the cubs visit https://rec.mrucougars.com/sports/2024/7/30/cubs-dance-team.aspx
