The Mount Royal Cougars men’s hockey season is underway, and they are looking to get off to a good start at home against a tough rival.
Home opener
The Cougars’ home opener will take place at Flames Community Arena on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m. against the University of Calgary Dinos. Tickets are free for MRU students and employees, and they can be purchased using your ONECard online.
Last season
In 2024-25, Mount Royal finished with a record of 22-6, which put them in first place in the Western division. They made it all the way to the Canada West finals, where they lost to the University of Saskatchewan in three games. The Cougars qualified for the University Cup and lost in the quarter-finals to Toronto Metropolitan University in a game that saw five overtime periods, the longest game in U Sports history.
Looking ahead
U Sports has ranked Mount Royal seventh on their national power ranking list after the team started the season with one win and one loss. Forward Connor Bouchard is returning for his fourth year after leading the team in assists and points. The team has also brought in some key players that hope to make an impact:
- Ethan Buenaventura, a first year goalie previously with the Penticton Vees
- Tanner Komzak, a third year defensemen who played at the University of North Dakota
- Bowden Singleton, a first year forward who played with the Calgary Canucks
