The Learn English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program at Mount Royal University allows domestic and international students to strengthen and develop their English language skills for academic, career or personal growth.
Skills you will learn
The courses develop language skills such as:
- Speaking and listening
- Reading and writing
- Grammar and fluency
- Pronunciation and comprehension
LEAP Levels
The program has four levels, ranging from low-intermediate to advanced. Prospective students take a placement test to determine their level with testing done in-person at MRU.
International students outside of Canada take their placement test online. There are three placement tests for international students on grammar, writing and speaking.
Each LEAP level takes place over 13 weeks. It will take 15 months to complete the program if a student starts at LEAP 1.
Students in LEAP 3 and LEAP 4 are able to register for Academic Upgrading and Open Studies courses at MRU. This allows students to complete prerequisites for MRU degree programs while completing LEAP.
Completion of LEAP 4 meets the English language proficiency requirements at MRU for degree, diploma and certificate programs.
The classes prepares students for further education by using a university delivery style. Courses take place over fall, winter and spring semester.
The program is accredited by Languages Canada, the national language education association. Courses are taught by Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certified instructors.
