Summarizing the UPASS

The UPASS at Mount Royal University is a program allowing free transit access for full time students. MRU considers a full-time student to be enrolled in a minimum of nine credits or a 60% work load. It is included as mandatory fee.

Everyone can access their UPASS by registering through MyFare or the Calgary Transit app.

The mandatory fee was decided through a student led vote. It led to the majority deciding to carry-out the program and continue the mandatory payment for students eligible.

The UPASS helps Mount Royal students gain free access to the entire Calgary Transit system which includes the C-Train and bus networks. The pass is only valid in Calgary  as it doesn’t extend to outside communities such as Airdrie.

Leaving the program

To opt-out of the UPASS program you need to be apart of an eligible group. One of these include students with physical disability’s who take the Handy or Access Calgary busses. As well as, those who can’t use the transit system due to their disability. Students who are legally blind and have a CNIB pass are also included.

Another group are Mount Royal students who are off campus. Including those studying abroad, in field studies away from Calgary, or students in distance learning programs who aren’t in classes for the term.

The last group include senior students with a senior bus pass or Calgary Transit workers who get free travel under their employer.

Having a low income bus pass does not exclude students from the UPASS fee.
