TikTok is everywhere in the palm of our hands and everyone can be a creator! (Matt Grocock, CMRU.ca)

TikTok rose to popularity in late 2019 by filling the void of short form media content that apps like Vine had popularized. The popularity and accessibility of TikTok quickly made it the best platform for emerging creators to showcase their talent in short style videos. Content creators at any level of skill should consider TikTok as the gateway to their content creation journey since it offers the most exposure with fewest barriers of entry.

TikTok makes it easy to bring ideas to life

The beauty of TikTok is that it assists creators in making their desired content even when lacking the technical skills you would usually need to edit, colour-correct, and more. TikTok offers tools within the app that simplify the process of post-production and make entering the content creation sphere easier.

As a content creator, I found that eliminating the barrier of technical skills from content creation, which means we have more emerging creators making content and showing off the talent they have in storytelling or cinematography while still having the outlet to showcase editing skills.

TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world right now and this means that content creators will have the widest reach for their content without the extra work. I have struggled with making YouTube videos in the past, since it takes a lot of time to choose design thumbnails, make a catchy title or get the video tags perfect. TikTok’s scroll design made it easier to focus on the actual content for emerging creators making it much easier for creators to start on TikTok with their talent and then move to another, more monetizable, platform like YouTube.

Some consider TikTok lazy and over-saturated

Many people, including myself at one point, believe that TikTok isn’t a great platform because short-form content is lazy and there are too many people fighting for views on the app. While there is a sea of creators all fighting for virality on TikTok it doesn’t mean that talented creators will get overlooked, but rather have more chances of being seen and shared. Overall it’s certainly worth giving it a shot since it’s easy to do and who knows if you’ll be the next viral TikTok influencer.

TikTok is a stepping stone to success

TikTok isn’t perfect but it really has lowered the barriers to every level of content creation and provided us with access to the largest social media platform we’ve seen. Even though there may be more content being posted daily than ever before it will also mean your content and skills have the best chance of reaching as many people as possible. Being able to express your stories and ideas without needing years of technical skills for post-production and a sea of people scrolling through content daily offers so many opportunities for emerging creators to get their start.
