Glenmore Christian Academy is a local private Christian school here in Calgary. As a school they do many different things to try and give back to their community and others that are less fortunate through the schools four main values. Which Dave Yang says are “to teach truth, inspire excellence, experience Christ, and serve through love.”

Ways they Give back

As a school community there are many people involved and able to help contribute to helping out their communities which is done in many different ways.

  • Toilet-trees
  • Dream Centre Service
  • Simple Serve
  • Mission To Others Hours
  • Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child
  • Christmas Hampers
  • Mexico Missions Trip

Elementary Giving Back

The Elementary grades in the school are responsible for the Toilet-trees, Dream Centre service and the simple serve. They are simple things that encourage young kids to help make a difference in the world even though they are just small things. The Toilet-Trees are Christmas trees that are setup throughout the wing that get decorated with different Toiletry items then close to Christmas everything gets donated to the mustard seed.

Junior High Giving Back

Then the junior high is responsible for the MTO (Mission to Others) hours, Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child, Christmas Hampers, and Grade 9 students get the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Mexico. Operation Christmas Child is an organization that assembles shoeboxes and sends them globally to kids who don’t aren’t privileged with much. The shoeboxes are packed with School Supplies and small knickknack toys. Then the Christmas Hampers the students bring in different food hamper items and gift cards that get collected for each homeroom class. With each class being responsible for a family they are able to provide aid and support for upward of 60 families apart from the GCA community or partnered churches community.

Authors Reflection

I think this can just help bring awareness to what a private school does as they are often misunderstood. Given the school does all these things to give back and to help the community and help those whose families are less fortunate than them. I learned a lot about how selfless a whole community can be and how willing they are to give back to their community whether or not the families attend the school. Assembling this piece was a lot of work and it was a creative challenge getting everything assembled in order and properly organized. Not having the best ability when it comes to video edits I found this as a really good challenge in trying to make it all fit and work in a way that I was happy with. It ended up going really smoothly and I ended up really liking how it turned out. I also loved the ability to connect with so many people who care so much about other people and how they are so willing to help others so selflessly.
