Stronger Together! (Hunter Pratt, cmru.ca)
United for Gender Equality: Stronger Together is this year’s theme for highlighting Canada’s commitment to equality and inclusivity.
Gender Equality Week takes place from September 17 to 23, as a way to celebrate and recognize the diversity that shapes individuals in our communities. This year’s theme intends to encourage unity regardless of an individuals gender, racial background, education, or sexual orientation.
This week is made as an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments made in advancing gender equality and to address gender gaps throughout the country. Some recent accomplishments include:
- increasing the number of women in science, technology, engineering, skilled trades and other fields to close the gender gap
- creating and implementing the five year National Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking
- announcing the Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan
- strengthening bilateral relations with the United States in ways such as addressing GBV and applying Gender-Based Analysis Plus
- employing women to key leadership positions, such as the Governor General, RCMP Commissioner, and President of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
