Pause4change foster puppies taken in Calgary (Darian MacDonald, CMRU.ca)
Pause4change is an animal rescue stationed right here in Calgary. The rescue strives to promote responsible pet ownership and to make positive changes for the animals here in our community. Pause4change was founded in 2012 and for the last decade has been run entirely by volunteers. Pause4change works both with partnered communities and rural areas around Calgary to bring stray dogs and cats off the streets and into forever homes.
I spoke with Drae Baker, a director and dog behavior and education coordinator at Pause4change. She spoke of her experiences at Pause4change and what makes Pause4Change different from other animal rescues.
Pause4change focuses on educating potential adopters on proper care in order to ensure their adoptable animals go into prepared, caring homes. Pause4change also offers free dog training after adoption to help promote a healthy environment for your new puppy and set you up for success.
Pause4Change also advocates for its animals by implementing a thorough adoption process. They do not adopt first come first serve. Instead, they find the best possible fit for your specific situation, whether you are a renter, a first-time owner, a family, or a single person. They also implement a multi-layered adoption vetting process. Ensuring that both the potential adopter is ready but that they also have the resources available to care for a pet.

Personal Reflection
I had such a lovely experience with Pause4change and their people. I personally feel very passionate about the welfare of animals. Specifically keeping them off the streets and not supporting breeders. So many animals die and suffer on the street and I want to do everything I can to help them. So getting an opportunity to learn about Pause4change and bring awareness to them and their cause means a lot to me. I truly do believe that Pause4change has so much love and care for the animals they foster and want to find them the best possible homes. Even though that sometimes requires more work, I really resonate with their mission to accept that work for the benefit of the animals. Working on this project has brought me a lot of joy and hope that we can make a difference as a community to help animals in need.
