Easter Seals Alberta has helped many people with disabilities and other medical conditions. The services that they provide for individuals have been changing lives for decades.

2022 ambassador, Alex Mertens, has been attending the program, Camp Horizon, which gives people with disabilities, outdoor activities and camping that allows individuals to connect and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Mertens is a student at Mount Royal University and has been attending Easter Seals Camp Horizon for 8 years now. She advocates for Camp Horizon as a “magical place” for herself and is always excited to go back to see camp counselors and friends.

Mertens has already started a home business and takes a vocational program, hoping to one day work in media! Alex has attended many events in place for Easter Seals Alberta such as the Kevin Karius Easter Seals Celebrity Golf Classic and the opening of the splash park at Camp Horizon.

Easter Seals Alberta has aspirations and goals for their individuals, such as:

  • Inspiring potential.
  • Building community.
  • Enriching lives.
  • Inspires inclusion.
  • Provides independence.
  • Provide recreational opportunities.

I did an interview with Mertens to gain more perspective on what Easter Seals Alberta has done for its community and people.

I had learnt a lot during this interview and understood the values that Easter Seals hold and should be known for helping with inclusion of peoples with disabilities and medical conditions. Anyone can help out by going on the website and seeing how you can contribute by doing something like holding/attending a fundraiser, donating to events, or volunteering!

Personal Reflection

Personally, the interview with Alex Mertens from Easter Seals Alberta was an eye-opening experience, that showed me the impact that Camp Horizon had on many lives. By providing recreation to individuals with disabilities and other medical conditions, it allows for independence of those with disabilities, and an opportunity to meet others and create friendships within the community. Seeing the work that Easter Seals does, has inspired me and hopefully others to be motivated despite any setbacks that we may face.
