Kanye West is one of the most prolific and best-selling Hip-hop artists of all time with over 120 million records sold worldwide. The American rapper and producer released his tenth studio album “Donda” in late August 2021. The album consists of 27 songs with features from Jay Z, The Weekend, Young Thug, and many more.

One specific song from the Kanye’s album I find interesting is “Donda”. It has two distinct versions.

The first version is a chant of “Donda” throughout the entire 53 seconds of the song. The chorus is performed by the Sunday Service Choir and is based on a verse in the Bible. “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever” from Ephesians 1:11-23 . It speaks about Kanye’s religious belief as a Christian and believer of Christ.

This is not the first time the rapper takes scriptures in the Bible to make a hit record. In 2018, Kanye released “Jesus is King” to publicly express his Christian faith.  Unlike many other music artists, Kanye publicly holds Sunday church services, where he has performed his latest song “Donda”.

Many people find it weird and awkward, however, Kanye has gathered his own congregation to his Sunday services. Famous celebrities like Justin Bieber , Brad Pitt , Katy Perry and other Superstars sings alongside him during his church services.

Is this an act of selling records, or a pure expression of Kanye’s faith? A question that many people ask frequently. As for me, after listening to both versions of Donda. I believe freedom of expression, and freedom of worship is a great privilege. One that Kanye enjoys in expressing his thoughts. As a public figure, Kanye is tries as much to practice what he preaches. His Sunday services is evidence.

However, losing a loved one is painful. The second version of the song manifests the grief, guilt, and regrets that have internally crushed the rapper following the death of his mother “Donda West” in 2007.  The “Donda” chant is intended to capture the sense of grief Kanye has felt over the passing of his mother. The song has a soundbite from his mother talking about the instructions and advice she gives him. Why this soundbite? A question that I believe symbolizes mother and son relationship.

Donda explains the tragic of his mother. This loss is still hard for the rapper to accept or let go. Many journalists report that Kanye developed  Bipolar disorder   as a result of the death of his mother. However, there is no medical evidence that validates these reports.

In conclusion, both versions of “Donda” are reflective of the rapper’s mindset, values, and his religious belief. Specifically using this song to appease his fans while keeping the memory of his mother.

My Overall Ratings: 8/10
