The Canadian Football League is one of the most accessible sports leagues for young Canadians. Despite this, the CFL is severely lacking in young female fans. A recent report by 3DownNation shares that only thirteen percent of Gen Z Canadian women identify as fans of the CFL. I’ve been a CFL fan since I was a toddler, and it always confused me why more girls aren’t into the sport. I came to realize that in fact, most of my girlfriends don’t even really know about the league or why it’s so awesome! Well, here is a rundown of the top reasons why the CFL should be your new favourite thing!

1. It’s cheap

It’s a fact that CFL tickets are way more friendly for a student budget than any other top-level pro sport. You can pick up Calgary Stampeders tickets for only $15. Plus, you can pick up a dozen mini donuts at the game for only six bucks! Talk about a steal!

2. It’s a new thing to do with friends

Did you know that McMahon Stadium, where the Stamps play, has a designated student section? It’s a great place to hang with your friends and meet new ones. All the teams have a FanFest each year as well, where you can meet the players and have a backstage – and on-field – tour of the stadium.

3. Tons of Instagram opportunities

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably searched high and low for new places to take Instagram pictures. Luckily, football games make for the perfect photo-op with – with flawless lighting and lots of background colour. Also each time the Stamps score, they let off a round of fireworks, which makes for a great ‘Gram background.

4. It’s the only sport that is uniquely Canadian

Canadian Football is a sport that’s played in only one country in the world, right here at home! How cool is it that when you go to a CFL game you’re part of something that is completely Canadian designed and built? What makes it even cooler is that the CFL invites players from all around the world to come join the Canadian family.

5. The CFL gives back to the community

The CFL has put its organizational weight behind breast cancer research and treatment. Here in Calgary, the Stamps host a “pink power” game each year. Afterwards, the team makes a big donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

6. Last but not least, It’s exciting

So many CFL games are won or lost in the last minutes. A bigger field and more players means there is a back and forth that you just don’t see in other versions of football. It truly is a game that has you on the edge of your seats, whether you’re watching at home or at the stadium.

Being a CFL fan my entire life has given me the most amazing memories that I will never forget. There is no better way to spend a summer or fall evening than hanging out with your friends, chowing down and watching football. It’s an iconic Canadian experience. So to all my Gen Z girls: snag some tickets and check out a CFL game! I promise you, you won’t regret it!
