Whiplash is one of the best movies to come out in the last 7 years. The premise of the movie starts off pretty basic with a drummer that wants to just make Shaffer conservatory. A highly prestigious conservatory in the university that he is attending. Miles Teller plays a kid named Andrew who is a nerdy stereotypical band kid that is looking to break into music.

At first I was hesitant to give this movie a chance. I mean a movie about drumming really didn’t interest me at all. I don’t play any instruments. However, after watching the movie it’s deeper than just drumming.

J.K. Simmons makes this movie what it is. This is his best movie I have seen him in by far. He is a cut-throat instructor that wants to get the most out of every student he has. Miles Teller’s character and J.K Simmons’ characters interacting throughout the movie show the dedication, determination, and drive you have to have to become the very best. Anyone that has competed at a high level will understand and appreciate how Damien Chazelle portrays this through the blood, sweat and tears Andrew goes through in Whiplash. It goes through the trials of failure and how it is essential to the process to become better.

J.K Simmons or Fletcher as he’s known in the movie pushes his 3 drummers that he puts through hell and holds each of them to crazy high standards in order to get the best out of them. So much so that in order to become the starting drummer he has all three of them play for hours on end until they get the beat right, even with all of their hands bleeding. This might sound super slow paced but the edits on this movie are crazy.

Making drumming have tension like a car chase or a shoot-out. If you ever are at home sitting wanting to watch a drama. Whiplash is one of the best.
