Continuing students will typically be told if they received an award between June and August after they apply. (Jennelle Lew, CMRU.ca)
Award applications are still open until March 1, 2026. Students who apply before this date will be considered for awards for the upcoming academic year. There are many scholarships available from Mount Royal University, provincial and federal governments, and private organizations. Students will be automatically considered for most awards with a general application. Other awards require specific applications with more requirements, such as essays. Watch out — some of these specific awards have different deadlines. A lot of these current awards and scholarships can be found in MRU’s searchable awards database.
The difference between scholarships, bursaries, and awards
Scholarships are granted to students based on grades and extracurricular activities. MRU students typically need a 3.2 GPA to receive a scholarship, but not always. Bursaries are given to students who prove they need more financial aid. Grades do not matter when applying for bursaries. Awards recognize a student’s excellence in many different areas. The only requirement is to be in good academic standing, which means having a 2.0 GPA or higher.
It’s not just academics
Awards aren’t always about being the best in class. There are many awards for all kinds of achievements, including:
- Athletics
- Involvement in clubs and societies
- Volunteering in the community
- Creative writing or art
- Professional work experience
- A good grade in a specific course
- Financial need
Be sure to include all extracurricular activities on awards applications. Students might receive an award for something unexpected.
Why students should apply for awards
Paying for education is a big source of stress for students. Scholarships and awards can take a weight off their shoulders. Awards can help pay for tuition, but they are also great to put on resumes and LinkedIn profiles. Some employers may see awards as proof of students’ achievements and drive. Overall, it never hurts to have some extra money to put towards university.
