Calgary’s temperatures are currently dropping, and that means flu season is in full swing. Mount Royal University students are encouraged to get their flu shots for the rest of the fall semester to protect each other from the flu virus.

Why get the vaccine?

The influenza virus has different strains every year, which is why it’s important to get a flu shot during flu season. The flu can affect many people who are at high risk of contracting the virus, and even worsen existing complications some people may have. These include pregnant women, younger children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. The virus can also result in the development of other possible problems in vulnerable individuals. These include hospitalization, heart complications, and possibly even death. Infected individuals can spread to others in 1 day and can be most contagious in the first 3 days. More information about the flu virus can be found here or by calling the Public Health Agency of Canada at 1-844-280-5020

Where to get the vaccine

MRU students can get their vaccine every October on specific dates. Students can also get vaccinated at the Wyckham Pharmacy if they missed the annual clinic hosted on Campus. Local pharmacies are also open to anyone to receive their flu shot. Every flu vaccine is free and only requires an individual’s personal health number. It’s expected to experience slight soreness in the arm and possible headaches. It’s recommended to take pain relievers such as Tylenol or Advil if any of these symptoms occur. It also takes two weeks for the best protection from the influenza virus.
