Mayoral Race Results 2025

Unofficial results show Jeromy Farkas holding a narrow lead of fewer than 600 votes over Sonya Sharp in Calgary’s mayoral race. Sharp has indicated she would seek a recount, as this slim margin meets the threshold under Alberta’s election regulations once official results are released later today. The recount will determine whether Farkas’s lead holds or if the city’s next mayor will be decided after further review.

Voter turnout in this year’s municipal election was slightly lower than in previous elections, with many Calgarians citing concerns over affordability, infrastructure, and downtown revitalization. Both campaigns have expressed confidence in their results but emphasize the importance of ensuring every vote is counted accurately to maintain public trust in the electoral process.

Recount Rules

Under Alberta’s Local Authorities Election Act, candidates can request a recount if the margin separating them is fewer than one-quarter of one per cent of total ballots cast. After official results are announced, only the runner-up may request a recount within 72 hours. New provincial rules specify whether the recount covers all polling stations or only those where the margin falls below 0.5 per cent.

Elections Calgary states any recount costs are covered by its budget, and workers are prepared to conduct the process, which must be completed by noon on Oct. 29, the same day the new city council is scheduled to be sworn in.
