The long list of fees that come with tuition can be hard to understand. Many students experience the same confusion. Let’s have a look at the SAMRU portion of the fees.

All of these fees are collected by Mount Royal University on behalf of the students association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU). These fees are split into four separate categories. The four categories are General and Operating fee, Capital Campaign fee, Scholarship fee, and the Health and Dental fee. The student ran newspaper, The Reflector as well has a fee that varies for part time and full time student.

Fees to expect

The General and Operating fee is a collected for the reason of providing services to students like Wyckham House as well as other student services. Currently the fee for full time students is $94.46 and for part time students it is $45.16. Other ways this money is being spent is student services, bursaries and scholarships, programs, etc.

  • The Capital Campaign fee funds the mortgage payments for the Wyckham House Student Centre. Any left over money gets put into an account and used for any additional work that has to happen on the student centre. This fee can increase year to year due to inflation but cannot exceed $40 for full time students and $24 for part time students.
  • The Scholarship fee is something SAMRU approved in 1998 that collected three dollars from students (part time and full time) to allow MRU to give out $100,000 a year in scholarships and bursaries
  • The Health and Dental fee is something the school introduced in the 1990s to have full time students have health and dental insurance plans. The student insurance plans receive top grades yearly . As well the usage rate yearly is very good at 80-100 per cent. Students that are taking nine credits in a semester are eligible for the health and dental plans.

A non SAMRU fee is the Reflector fee.  The Reflector is an independent media outlet that collects fess through SAMRU.  The fees are $3.63 for part time students and $7.25 for full time students. For more information about the Reflector fee, please contact The Reflector’s Managing Editor, Ivar Bergs, by phone at (403) 440-6268 or by email at managingeditor@thereflector.ca.

If there are any other questions about any of these fees should be directed to SAMRU in the Wyckham House Student Centre located in Z222. If any furthers questions head to the MRU Tuition and Fees schedule page on Mount Royal’s website.
