The Students’ Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) established the Experiential Learning Fund (ELF) to cover costs of extracurricular experiences outside of school like conferences, field trips, exchange programs and more.

The fund must be used to cover meals, transportation, and accommodations and cannot be used to cover tuition, faculty fees, administration fees, pleasure travel, illegal activities or experiences that would be reimbursed by any other source of income.

Students can apply to a maximum of two ELF opportunities per academic year, capped at a total of $1,000 per student. However, by MRU policy a single student is not allowed to get more than three scholarships, bursaries, and awards in a single year nor be awarded more than $5,000 in total.

The awarded amount will vary depending on the following criteria:

 – For conferences within Alberta, it can cover up to $150 or 50% of eligible costs (whichever is less)

– For conferences within Canada, it can cover up to $300 or 50% of eligible costs (whichever is less)

– For conferences outside of Canada, it can cover up to $500 or 50% of eligible costs (whichever is less)

– For experiences like student exchange, temporary work or field trips it can cover up to $700 or 30% of eligible costs (whichever is less)

Applicants must be 18 years or older, be current MRU credit students and have at least a 2.0 GPA.

Applications must be submitted 2 months before the start of each semester. In May for events happening from July to December, in November for events from January to April and in March for events from May to June.

Applications can be submitted to the Wyckham House office (z222) or online through the SAMRU website.

Upon completion the applicant must provide a brief report of the event, a photo and expense receipts to receive a cheque for either the approved amount, or the actual expenses.
