Mount Royal University's cybersecurity team warns students about scam emails that might pop up in your student email. (Megan Bell, CMRU.ca)
Mount Royal University’s cyber security team has been informed about a recent email circulating MRU accounts. They want you to watch out for an email referencing a “Yamaha grand piano donation.”
The original message was sent out on September 8th, 2025 from a non-MRU account with the name, Whitney Mercer.
Tips to watch out for in scam emails:
- Check the senders email address.
- In the message it signs off with an MRU email address, do not trust this as the original message does not come from an MRU address.
- If the email says for you to use a private email to reply back.
- At the end of the original message it says to write “via your private email for a swift response.” You do not need to reply.
- If you think the email includes offers that are too good to be true.
- Check for suspicious links, and poor grammar and spelling.
The best action to take
If you have received any emails like this one, is to report the email to google or forward the message to reportphish@mtroyal.ca
