Mount Royal University’s rock-climbing wall is a fun place to work out, but it’s also an amazing place to meet new people that share a similar hobby. Rock climbing is a sport that is usually better with friends, so it is no surprise that going to the rock wall is a great place to meet new people at the university.
For the past seven years the Mount Royal University’s rock-climbing wall has hosted a bouldering competition every fall. Everyone in the MRU climbing community looks forward to either competing in or watching the annual Boulder Bash.
The Boulder Bash competition
The Boulder Bash event is a bouldering competition that goes on for five days. With the fifth day being the Boulder Bash finals. The first four days of the competition are what’s called a scramble competition; this is where the climbers go and climb as many of the 30 problems as they can in a certain amount of time. marking how many attempts it took them to complete each problem. The climbers were broken down into three classes, there were Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Climbers. The top six of every climber category makes it into the finals. This year there was a tie in the intermediate category allowing for seven competitors.
Hosting the competitions
When talking to the staff at the rock wall it was clear that they have hosted this competition for as long as they have because of the community. The boulder bash brings people closer together and brings more people into the amazing climbing community here at mount royal university.

Authors Reflection
Over the course of this project, it was awesome to get to work with the people at the climbing gym. Everyone there was super nice and happy to have the competition be filmed. All the competitors were very nice people, and you could tell that they just love climbing and the community that the MRU rock wall has formed over the years. The Rock wall does a number of competitions throughout the year, and I can say with 100 % certainty, if I’m not filming them, I will be competing or watching them.
