What is the MRU Peru field school?

The MRU Peru field school is a four-week trip that allows students to experience the vibrant culture and varied landscapes of Peru from a local viewpoint. During this trip, students will connect with communities, visit historical sites, and participate in activities that showcase the country’s distinct traditions and customs. This immersive experience deepens understanding of Peruvian life and promotes meaningful interactions with local residents, enriching education and creating unforgettable memories.

Insights from the trip coordinator at MRU

Brad Clark, MRU professor, and trip coordinator says,  “It’s an opportunity for you to immerse yourself in aspects of Peruvian life and culture that you don’t get access to traveling as a tourist”. He details the trip in the following interview:

Field school itinerary

Lima

The field school begins by spending the first week in Lima. Students will spend time at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, learning Spanish and working on course material.

Calca

The next few weeks are spent in Calca, a small town in Peru’s sacred valley, discovering how Indigenous knowledge is used to adopt sustainable agricultural practices. Students will learn about coffee production from expert co-operatives and meet an Indigenous man referred to as ‘the potato king’, who teaches people from all over the world how to grow potatoes. During this time, students will have the opportunity to get to know the community and experience authentic life in the rural areas of Peru. For the remainder of the time in Calca, students will hike up the last leg of the Inca Trail and visit Machu Pichu.

Cusco

The last few days of the trip will be spent in Cusco, camping out, visiting archeological ruins, and working on final projects.
