Brad Pitt as Billy Beane said it best
Baseball Playoffs in the MLB are beautiful in so many ways, whether it’s watching a hate filled rivalry, or watching a player that’s never been to the postseason hit a homerun. Seeing any team celebrate anything, fans get goosebumps, they might even get teary eyed… or that might be just me. Fans just can’t help but quote Brad Pitt as Billy Beane in the movie Moneyball and ask “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” Here are a few moments from the past few weeks that have made me ponder this question.
Philadelphia Phillies
Most recently I think of what I witnessed on Sunday October sixth, the Philadelphia Phillies are taking on the New York Mets. The lead has changed so much in this game there have been a total of 21 hits, with six home runs between both teams. A clutch triple is hit by the Phillies second baseman, Bryson Stott on his 27th birthday. With the game tied up in the bottom of the ninth inning, Nick Castellanos has two runners on base and hits a hard line drive up the leftfield line walking off game two of the National League Divisional Series, after this hit Nick is seen running up to a fan in the stands, which is his 11 year old son, who is always sitting in the front row to cheer on his dad, and he celebrates this monumental moment with him.
New York Mets
On Thursday, October third, the New York Mets were taking on the higher ranked Milwaukee Brewers in the final game of the best two out of three Wildcard series, and in the top of the ninth inning, Pete Alonso, who has been a Met for his whole career, hits a three-run homerun to take the lead. That was the moment that took the Mets to the next round of the Postseason.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Shohei Ohtani’s season was so incredible to witness. Japanese player Shohei Ohtani became the first player to have a 50/50 season, which means he hit fifty homeruns and stole fifty bases. On September 19th Ohtani hit this milestone in insane Ohtani style. Starting in the first inning he steals his 50th base on a close but historic call. In the top of the sixth inning, Shohei has only gone three for three, but he comes out guns blazing to hit his 49th homerun of the season. At Ohtani’s next at bat, he makes history and hits his 50th homer of the season, and again during the top of the ninth inning, he is not done yet and hits his third home run of the game and his 51st of the season. This game was historic for many different reasons as Ohtani went six for six and had one of the greatest outings by a player ever.
Have fun watching all the post season baseball, and cherish all those romantic moments.
