Getting ahead of the midterm stress

Try reading outside to relieve your stress and to get some fresh air! (Brennan Lowes, CMRU.ca)

Feeling stressed? You are not alone as your peers are likely feeling the same way.

Managing stress while attending Mount Royal University

With midterm exams coming up before and after MRU’s fall reading break, many students (me included) are feeling stressed due to the weight of their courses piling up. I find myself being more irritable than usual and feeling guilty when doom scrolling on social media. The NHS says stress can manifest in trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, and even snapping at people.

Strategies to help cope with your stress

The first step in alleviating your stress is pinpointing what is causing it—in this case, your university course load. Now that you know what is causing it, you can find ways to relax and get your mind off of what is getting to you.

Try these strategies:

  • Eating balanced meals throughout the day.
  • Take time between study sessions to be active and get moving.
  • Find a hobby that’s not your coursework so you have something to do other than your studies; watching your favourite show, reading a book, watercolour painting, etc.
  • Try keeping a detailed planner or list of things you need to do; that way you can feel accomplished while checking each thing off as you complete them.
  • Find time to be with friends and family to get you in a different environment than your house and MRU’s campus.
  • Try a meditation app like Headspace.

If all goes well, you should feel better and have the right mindset to dive into the books for another study session.
