Going forward after water restrictions. (Aidan Olecko, CMRU.ca)

As of September 22, all water restrictions in the city of Calgary were lifted.

It’s been a long and arduous journey for city workers to repair the burst in the Bearspaw Southfeeder Main. For the last four months, the city has been under pressure to cut down daily water use.

Going Forward

Since the issue was officially resolved on Sunday, citizens may be wondering if there’s anything else they need to know about Calgary’s water situation. But now, after a long period of water restrictions coming to an end, Calgarians can reflect on how our daily lives were affected by this disruption. It also might be time for the city to consider what our priorities should look like around the usage of water.

Some citizens of Calgary completely ignored the restrictions, but others began to wonder about how much water is actually needed vs. misused. Some people realized they don’t need fifteen minute showers everyday and others concluded that they didn’t need to wash their car twice a week. One can look at it as making a little sacrifice, which is practically harmless.

But were they truly sacrifices?

By asking this, Calgarians are also forced to contemplate what counts as a sacrifice when practicing methods of conserving essential commodities. Hopefully, after the last several months of restrictions, the city learned that making little sacrifices here and there are going to be a major benefit if Calgary is presented with similar challenges down the road.
