A growing hub for wellness and community connection

The Killarney Glengarry Community Association (KGCA) has experienced significant growth in the programs offered by the centre over the past year. The centre now provides five dedicated health and fitness programs designed to support residents of all ages.

The centre has a line up of different programs focused on getting people out of their houses and active. Thomas says, “It’s a great way to get adults to come relax and get some physical exercise and mental relaxation as well”. Except for family yoga, which encourages families to get active together!

Five Signature Programs

  • Tai Chi – A low-impact class focused on balance, mobility and mindfulness.
  • Yoga – A traditional mat based session for strength and flexibility.
  • Family Yoga – Parent-child classes designed to make wellness a group activity.
  • High Fitness – A fast paced cardio workout that blends music and movement.
  • Pilates – A core strengthening program used for posture, alignment and injury prevention.

A space designed for everyone

During an interview with Thomas, he highlights the importance of the community centre and how utilizing the space while daycare isn’t in session helps to keep the building running.

Thomas highlights that it is less about making money and about offering diverse programs, “so that almost anyone can find something to do here, whether it’s an event or program,” he said.

Building long-term wellness

The centre hopes to continue expanding programming into the next few years and hopefully, have some beautification work (renovations) done on the centre. If you are interested in learning more about the community centre, visit the KGCA home website.

Reflection

Working with Thomas Mo for this project gave me a very meaningful look into how community spaces operate and why they matter. While filming his interview, along with gathering b-roll in and outside the building, which helped me understand the growth behind the growth in the community centre, seeing the space outside and inside that they utilize for the programs showcases the beauty of the building.

What stood out the most to me was hearing him talk about the programs that the community centre offers and seeing the joy and love for the centre he has, which really makes me feel good about choosing this organization to showcase all the great work they do in the community.

What stood out to me most in my interview with Thomas was his passion for creating a fun and safe environment for anyone to enjoy. He emphasized that the focus isn’t on profit but instead on making sure the majority of the programs offered allow anyone to participate.

Thomas also shared how using the space while daycare is out of session helps to provide funding for renovations and other fees related to the centre, maintaining a fun and inclusive environment for everyone.

Overall, working with Thomas made my project feel purposeful, and I feel fulfilled knowing that I had the opportunity to help out an organization that does good in the community now, in the past, and in the future.
