A Sandwich, A Smile, A Stronger Community
At Experience Church, they believe that faith isn’t just about Sunday services, it’s about caring for one another in everyday, tangible ways. That’s why their lunch program in partnership with Brown Bagging has become such a powerful act of love and service in our city.
Every Monday and Wednesday generous volunteers from the church gather to assemble nutritious, hope filled lunches for children who might otherwise come to school hungry. Its a simple act – a sandwich, a fruit, a snack – but to a child, it can mean the world: a midday meal, a moment of dignity, a reminder that they matter.
In a world where rising food costs and housing pressures strain many Calgary families, these lunches bring relief and stability. There are many options when it comes to diet including vegetarian and halal.
Experience Church has been packing lunches for over six years. Right now they provide lunches to two local schools. This includes packing the lunches, storing them and then transporting them to the designated schools. On Monday’s they provide lunches for the first half of the week and on Wednesday’s they cover the remainder of the week, making sure the food is as fresh as possible.

Personal Reflection
Participating in the Experience Church bagged-lunches initiative was a meaningful opportunity for personal and professional growth. Through this project, I saw firsthand how a simple, practical act such as preparing lunches can carry deep emotional weight for the children who receive them. It reminded me that service is not abstract; it is tangible, human, and immediate.
Working alongside the volunteers, I observed how naturally compassion flowed through the group. There was a collective sense of purpose: every bag sealed and every lunch labeled with care. This atmosphere allowed me to reflect on my own values around kindness, dignity, and social responsibility.
In my role documenting and presenting this work, I learned to be intentional about tone and framing. Instead of focusing on need or scarcity, I chose to highlight community, support, and hope. This project helped me deepen my understanding of ethical storytelling such as using communication not to sensationalize, but to uplift.
Ultimately, this experience reminded me of the power of small actions when done consistently and with heart. I am grateful to have been part of a team that believes in showing love through action, and I carry forward a renewed sense of gratitude and empathy
