New legislation has been introduced in Alberta that will bring about adding two new visuals to the drivers license. Premier Danielle Smith said that the government will be adding a citizenship marker and Alberta healthcare numbers to drivers licenses  starting fall 2026. Danielle Smith say this will create a more streamlined process for Albertans to “apply for student aid, accessing health benefits, or supporting those with disabilities”.

The other major function of this change is to allow for only Canadian citizens cast ballots in elections, safeguarding the elections so there is more trust in our democracy and creates more integrity in the elections. With the addition of healthcare card numbers to drivers licenses its main focus is to create more security with the healthcare system as there are over 530,438 more healthcare numbers than people living in the province.

The main purpose of these changes according to Premier Danielle Smith and Minister of Service Dale Nally is to streamline the processes and make it easier for Albertans to access government benefits so everyone has to find and carry around less paperwork.

Key Information:

  • No additional charge for adding the citizenship or healthcare card number
  •  Begins fall 2026
  • Only Canadian citizenship will be added
  • Required to bring proof of residence when renewing ID
  • Allows for verification of citizenship across the province
