Mount Royal University and the Students’ Association of Mount Royal University will host the 29th Annual Powwow on Saturday, Nov. 1, at Wyckham House. The Grand Entry begins at 5 p.m., with celebrations continuing until midnight.
The Powwow will feature traditional drumming, dancing and a variety of performances that highlight the richness and diversity of Indigenous culture. Guests can look forward to a welcoming atmosphere where people of all backgrounds are invited to take part in the celebration. Free parking will be available in Lot 4, and food and refreshments will be available throughout the evening.
Honouring Indigenous Traditions
The Powwow is a sacred social gathering that celebrates the traditions and culture of Indigenous peoples through song, dance and drumming. The event serves as an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members to come together in a shared experience of learning and connection.
“Last year, we had a lot of non-Indigenous students attend, and I think it’s a good opportunity for these students to come learn and experience Indigenous culture,” said Melanie Parsons, one of the event organizers.
Fun for the Whole Family
Organizers say the annual Powwow is designed for attendees of all ages to enjoy and participate in Indigenous traditions. Families can take part in drumming, dancing and the Grand Entry ceremony. A Kids’ Corner will also be available with activities to keep younger guests engaged throughout the evening.
Mount Royal University and SAMRU encourage everyone to come out and take part in this meaningful family-friendly event. For more information on the Powwow, visit samru.ca.
