Attacker impersonating Instagram asks for “Authorization” of recipient’s Instagram reels

At Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, this tool is of key importance when it comes to writing for broadcasting, editing in adobe software, and is one of the most vital resources in the Broadcast Media Degree. (Aja Nielsen, CMRU.ca).

Mount Royal Cybersecurity says that suspicious emails coming from the name of Marcus H, are telling recipients they have received “frequent” notices coming from their Instagram Account regarding their reels.

The email states that these submissions were coming from ‘The Warner Music Group’. Be extra aware if you are active on social media, as this is a scam. This company is also asking for authorization using a Ticket ID and to go to their help center in order to verify your account.

For next steps, they ask you to click a link. It’s important to note that this link isn’t actually a domain, rather it is just a set of numbers. The email is also sent from a salesforce account which has nothing to do with Instagram itself, although stating it has authorization regarding Instagram reels.

If this happens to you, be wary before examining any links.

Things NOT to do if you are sent a similar email:

  • Do not respond. They are looking for interaction of any kind and may be feed into it.
  • Do not click any suspicious links.
  • Look at the domain of the email. Is it coming from a reputable company?
  • Does the account name match the company or person they are supposedly claiming to be?
  • Do they have any previous information regarding your account or are they just claiming to have it?

Next steps if you have received an email such as the one stated above:

  • Report the email to google or forward to reportphish@mtroyal.ca if regarding your MRU account.
  • Block any related emails including the one sent to you.
  • Warn people around you of the emails you’re receiving to prevent others from clicking any suspicious emails as well.
  • Keep up with the Cyber Spotlight blogs at Mount Royal in case the emails you’re receiving have similar tags to the emails you’ve received.
