Alberta driver's licences and Identification cards will display Canadian citizenship markers and health care numbers. (The Alberta Government)
Alberta is the first province to add a Canadian citizenship marker to driver’s licences and ID cards. The provincial government says it will offer residents a single card to access programs and services.
The new licences will be issued starting in fall 2026.
What this means for Albertans
The citizenship marker will be added to all new and renewed drivers’ licences. Individuals obtaining or renewing their licence need to bring proof of citizenship or immigration status. This shift ensures Albertans no longer need to carry multiple pieces of ID to access services.
There will be no additional cost to Albertans to add citizenship. Only Canadian citizenship will be displayed on drivers’ licences or ID cards.
Provincial population estimates more than half a million health care numbers registered than residents in Alberta. With this new process, Councils will be able to identify and better understand inconsistencies. The Alberta government hopes this change strengthens their election system, ensuring eligible citizens cast ballots.
Premier Danielle Smith says, “This is about more than convenience, it’s about trust. With a single, secure card proving both identity and citizenship, Albertans will face fewer hurdles when applying for government services. This will also strengthen the integrity of elections and other systems that rely on proof of citizenship.”
