Recognizing phishing emails is a necessary skill to have as a university student. (Aidan Olecko, CMRU.ca)

AI software is becoming more advanced by the day, it’s becoming more difficult to weed out unwanted emails.

A phishing email is an email generated by either hackers or AI. They are designed to gather private data about you. These emails can gather data about you even if you simply open the email.

The first way to identify a phishing email is to look at the sender address. If you don’t recognize this address, or if it looks suspicious, this is an immediate sign of phishing.

Another thing to watch out for is grammar and spelling. If there appears to be a lot of mistakes or the entire layout of the email seems odd, this is another sign that you probably don’t want to open this email.

The most obvious signs of phishing emails are threats or if the text is trying to convince you that something is wrong and the only way to fix that problem is to click a link or attachment in that email. Don’t fall for it!

As a university student, it is critical to be able to recognize phishing emails. Of all of the emails you have to read and reply to in just a single day of post-secondary studies, is already overwhelming. So, be cognizant when looking through your inbox!
