With the number of digital hackers in the world today it is no surprise that university students have become the targets of these new ‘phishermen’

Sometimes an email can be too good to be true, and if that is the case you probably should not click on it. Mount Royal University students have become the targets of online phishing scams over the last few years. 

Sometimes these emails can be quite silly, such as somebody trying to give away a piano, but other times they can be difficult to read. You could be expecting a package in the mail and a well-timed phishing email could rob you blind. It is important to stay safe online through various methods. 

One of the best ways to avoid a phishing scam is by installing a phishing alarm into your Gmail account. It is very simple to do and can save you from giving your private information to somebody who wants to do some mischievous things to your online accounts. 

Your mtroyal.ca email used to come stock with a phishing alarm button, but now there is another way. Gmail has introduced a “report phishing” button right into your emails. All you have to do is click on the three dots in the top right of the email and click on the ‘report phishing’ button and follow the instructions on screen. Online safety is a number one cybersecurity priority in 2024, especially with how much we depend on it as students. It is important to stay safe and always use your phishing alarm if you suspect that a new email might just be someone trying to bait the waters.
