The Mount Royal University preseason basketball tournament tipped off on Thursday evening with the hosts taking on the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack at Kenyon Court. The Cougars defeated the Wolfpack by a score of 74-57 to win their opening game of the tournament.

The game was close from the beginning of the first quarter to the end of the third. Both teams enjoyed a healthy lead throughout the contest but Mount Royal held a slender lead 46-44 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was where the Cougars pounced. After a few sluggish minutes, Mount Royal couldn’t miss. Two big threes from third-year guard Marissa Richards got the train started and there was no fight back from the team from Kamloops. Big defensive plays from third-year guard Asha Donnelly and clutch baskets from fifth-year guard Maddy Hooper sealed a 17 point Cougar win.

Fourth-year forward Nora Luca was the games leading scorer with 18 points for the Cougars. Maddy Hooper followed with 11 points and Asha Donnelly chipped in nine.

Who’s here to compete?
