Just over 56 per cent of the ballots cast in the Olympic Plebiscite in Calgary were for the No side. No to making a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The city conducted the Olympic vote to determine if there was enough public support to submit a bid.
The plebiscite is non-binding which means that city council doesn’t have to act on the results and council is expected to address the outcome of the plebiscite on Monday.
The plebiscite was also a test of the City of Calgary’s new vote tabulators.
The electronic voting system was brought in following last year’s civic election which was plagued by long voter lineups, a shortage of ballots and the city’s results website crashed.
That’s when Calgary’s Chief Returning officer said it was time for a more automated approach.
It means votes are automatically recorded and then stored.
The official results for Vote 2018 are:
- 132,832 YES (43.6%)
- 171,750 NO (56.4%)
- Total Ballots: 304,774
- Total Number of Eligible Voters: 767,734
