Cougar basketball is officially back as both the women’s and men’s Basketball teams are set to start their 2018-2019 campaigns this weekend. Here is our Season Preview.
The Women’s Basketball team is looking to learn and improve from their rough 1-18 record last season. Coach Nate McKibbon will be looking to improve his team on both ends of the court, especially now with star player, Becky Nash, no longer with the team. Nash averaged a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game and added 7.9 points per game. Hoping to fill Nash’s void are seven new Alberta recruits.
- Alesha Stanley
- Cameron Engen
- Kansas Long
- Kennedy Horn
- Maddison Hooper
- Maitlynn Miller
- Sarah Rinsky
With all the fresh faces, this season will be about creating an identity within the team. Fan’s should expect a rough start to start the season. However, the new players bring improved shooting, defense but most importantly, a winning mentality.
The men’s side is also looking to improve on a lack luster season where they failed to reach a winning record. Like the Women’s team, the men’s side will include three new players. Amongst the three recruits is, Pelumi Ajayi, a top high school prospect in the province. Coach Marc Dobell, believes Ajayi will be a cornerstone for Cougar Basketball.

The number one emphasis for the team this year? Defense. After a 1-4 preseason record with double digit losses, it will be interesting to see what adjustments Coach Dobell makes prior to the start of the season. Both teams will kick off their 2018-19 season Friday October 26, 2018.
