Calgarian AJ Smith is preparing for their book launch later this month. It is their first book. “My Heart is non-binary” is a series of poems that explore the emotions and journey of their transition. After years of feeling like they needed to pick a gender identity, AJ understood that they were non-binary.
When they were looking for information to help their transition they found there was not many programs in Calgary to clear up confusion or literary works that they could relate to. That’s AJ’s goal, to give people a book they can relate to and hopefully find inclusion.
The poems are not just made for the LGBT2SQ community; they were also made to bring awareness to mental health. AJ works as a healthcare aide and really aims to help people through their transitions in life and their book is a medium for this discussion.
There is a trigger warning featured at the beginning of the book because AJ says, “there is some dark emotions and I want to let those struggling know that they can be affected by what they read.”
One of the things that AJ would like to come out of this experience is for the reader to feel like they are not alone. The author says if they could give any advice to the reader, is that they don’t feel the stigmas that come with mental health and to seek out those who you can share with.
I asked AJ why they would want to publicly publish their book rather than be anonymous, their answer was simple: intellectual property. Each poem that is featured in the book is personal to AJ and their journey and they want to know that when someone is looking for someone to relate to they can look the author up and find a friendly face to go with it.
The book launch will be held in Calgary. AJ will also be at many markets throughout this year to promote the book.
- The little Vegan Fall Market: November 3, 2018 10am-3pm @ The Marda Loop community association.
- Crestmont Christmas Market: November 16, 2018 6pm-9pm @ 12400 Crestmont Blvd SW
More dates and venues will be updated after the book launch.
You can purchase a copy at the book launch or markets for $20.00 a book. $2 of every sale will go to: Robin’s Refuge helping animals this winter, and Skipping Stone helping non-binary and trans youth.
The book will be made available for purchase October 27th, 2018 on Amazon and Lulu for $15.99.
