New Horizon Mall opened its doors to the public in May of this year. It was advertised that it would be home to over 500 multicultural boutiques, with a unique business model.
Much like a condo, individual units are purchased and owned by a single person. The sizes of its units are also more compact than your usual store space, allowing for a broader quantity of stores to be offered to the public. To the public’s surprise, as of this moment, there are only 11 of the expected 500 stores opened, with another 28 scheduled to open by the end of October.
Although visitors have expressed their concerns, with some even calling it a “ghost town”, current unit and shop owners insist that, as with any new and innovative business venture, this was to be expected. “Who has experience in real estate, they know that a new project is going to take a little bit of time to fully operate.” says Adriana, owner of a few units in the mall.
Mounib, who leases Silk Road Importers doesn’t disagree. “Now the traffic is slow, very slow, except on weekends and when there are events but this will only be getting better and better.”
Although it hasn’t been highly advertised, New Horizon Mall has been the host for a variety of events since it opened its doors in May, with over 3000 attendees at each. Most recently, it hosted a Back to School Event as well as a Mid-Autumn Mooncake Festival, in the month of September.
“This mall represents Canada. You know why? It’s multicultural. You’re going to see stores from Turkey, Pakistan, China, Europe, Korea, everywhere. These are not the typical stores that you see in all malls. It’s something new.” She encourages the public to be patient and remain open to the unique experience that is the mall, the second of its kind in Canada. The first being Pacific Mall in Markham, Ontario which officially inaugurated in 1997, two years after opening its doors to the public. A mall which over the last 20 years has remained successful.
New Horizon Mall is open Monday to Saturday from 12 to 8 pm, and Sundays from 12 to 5 pm. Their next event will be the Fall Festival & Halloween Family Event which is occurring on Saturday, October 27th, from noon to 5 pm.
