Game Day at VRKADE in northeast Calgary
The Extra Life Calgary Guild held a 24-hour fundraising gaming event at VRKADE in northeast Calgary, from September 28, 2018 at 8 a.m. to September 29, 2018 at 8 a.m. The event had gamers playing on everything from board games to Virtual Reality games, with the VR equipment and venue being donated by VRKADE.
Admission to the event was by donation to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. Attendees could then make use of VRKADE’s various VR gaming stations in addition to board games and console games which were provided by Extra Life Calgary Guild and their supporters.
Extra Life Calgary Guild members were at the front door greeting attendees and explaining the event to the other VRKADE patrons. Patrons who did not initially know about the event donated money to the cause, as their VR gaming experience was taken care of by VRKADE.
Co-owners of VRKADE in northeast Calgary Warren Tremblay and Chris Adams donated their time and expertise to help guide event attendees’ VR gaming experiences.
Co-owner Warren Tremblay said that VRKADE in northeast Calgary wants to continue their support of Extra Life Calgary Guild and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. “…doing something with Extra Life to this magnitude as we are today is phenomenal, not only for us, but for everyone that wants to come on down they wanna try new experiences and they wanna be there for a good cause.” Listen to the full statement at the bottom of the page.

Gaming for the Kids!
The September 28th event is one of many Game Day fundraising events put on by Extra Life groups, called “guilds”. Extra Life is a fundraising event that began in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2008 and has since raised over $40 million with over 100,000 members in more than 70 cities in the U.S. and Canada. Their goal is to “Play Games. Heal Kids.”
100% of the donations from each Extra Life guild goes to their local children’s hospital. Extra Life works in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network, a non-profit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals, research, and children’s health issues.
There are around 170 member hospitals in Canada and the U.S. that are a part of the Children’s Miracle Network, including the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and others.
The Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation says that donations are used “to fund research, equipment, and family-centered care programs”. Through donations from groups including Extra Life Calgary Guild, the Alberta Children’s Hospital is the first children’s hospital in Western Canada to have 3-Tesla MRI scanners, which is “the leading-edge radiation-free MRI technology” according to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.
24 Hours of FUNdraising
The official Game Day for Extra Life fundraisers is November 3rd. While Extra Life Guilds fundraise in different events all year, November 3rd is the day that thousands of Extra Life members all over North America play games to raise money.
There are many ways that Extra Life members fundraise on Game Day, including:
- Hosting a Game Day party in their homes with friends and accepting donations as “admission”
- Livestreaming their games from home for 24 hours and accepting donations online
- Taking part in Game Day events in the city hosted by local businesses
Extra Life Calgary Guild member Charles says that he streams games online for his family and friends, “I host an interactive party game that all my friends and family that are out of town can play this JackBox party games with me over their own internet connections and we get to all kind of play together which is great.”
